I began a 365 Day Illustration Challenge in July (i.e. July 16, 2018) and i've been moving through the month of colored pencil illustrations, which has been really fun! It's allowed me to take a moment each day and rediscover depth & color transitions and details in the object of my daily drawings on such a different level.
I'm currently working on "an elaborate fruit tarte" illustration, which will take me a few days of off/on effort. In my attempt to continue completing one illustration a day ... i've started "the month of my favorite things" illustrations using only white/gold/silver gel pens. I'll be transitioning more into the month of gel pen drawings as I complete the remaining colored pencil illustrations over the next 1-2 weeks.
It's been a really interesting journey during the 365 Day Illustration Challenge so far. I've discovered that I love using colored pencils because I can sketch and erase if I make a "mistake" and start again, which I really like. Colored pencils allow me to clearly create the image I see in my mind's eye. I can also enhance and add nuance to an illustration by using different techniques with the pencils and adding depth by layering the color. I also like that I can use different angles of the pencil point to achieve various effects.
Using gel pens is an entirely different animal, which requires such a different expectation and approach. There is NO ERASING! So ... if your hand slips or the pen "drags" on the paper a bit too fast or too slow and you get a line that is not what you were after ... you really have to quickly adapt before the ink dries and begin to alter your illustration. I also find that I have to set a different expectation for what I'm trying to visually achieve. I love details and depth in my drawings so I have to adjust my thinking and my "hand" when I use gel pens to simplify. Using gel pens gives a really defined and more iconic visual, which is fun and it forces me to be really, really clear about the image i'm creating. I also love that it is so transparent and you see every single stroke in the illustration.
I'm off just now to grab lunch and work a bit more on the fruit tarte (which i'm excited to complete and share).
Hoping you have a wonderful day & if you're thinking of trying a new medium in your art I SO encourage you to explore and just do it! Remember to always have fun!
